DL650: Auxiliary Fuel Tank: Installation
This is the installation page for the auxilary fuel tank produced by Ron Smith. If you haven't seen it, you probably want to see the main aux fuel tank page.
The tank is easy to install. There are two mirror-image brackets; one for the left, one for the right. The brackets attach to the four mounting points of the package shelf; this means the rear Givi rack must come off and be reinstalled over the brackets. Otherwise, it's really easy.
Keep in mind the rails are very narrow, so it will make having a passenger difficult. You'd probably want to take the brackets off to have passengers.
These are some of the pictures while the tank was being prototyped. The brackets are prototypes, and are imperfect.
Attaching the prototype bracket.
Attaching the production bracket (note it is powdercoated now).
Production bracket from the top. You can see how it has bends to clear the package shelf, and doesn't interfere with the Givi mounting hardware.
Hole for the fuel line. It's virtually impossible to run the line without drilling a hole- sorry.
Under the fuel tank- this is the inspection plate, where the fuel pump and sender are mounted. It's the fuel line that runs down against the frame- you can see the hose clamp against the tank. These fittings are tapped and welded in place, so they won't be a problem.
Mounting the tank. One bolt is partially in place. You can also see the bungee eyelets from there.
Fuel line, again. The hole must be oversized or oval, or it will eventually rub through the fuel line. Thomas Southwood recommends using a step bit, but a dremel would probably work.
Notice the "fender clips" attached to the bottom of the tank. The bolts screw into these, rather than tapping the fuel tank.
Vent line routing. The vent line crosses over the bike, and is zip-tied to the Givi rack. The white zipties are installed for clarity. I'll retake these pictures, they are a little blurry.
Vent line. Note the routing down against the package shelf, then underneath it.
