3/21: In Zacatecas

Knowing that we would stay in Zacatecas a few days, and how stressful the previous days had been, we slept in for a while before setting out on the town. We spent the morning walking and browsing through stores. By the time we were done, we were both a little lost. Finally we got to familiar ground, but it still took us a full hour to climb the hills between there and “home”. We had a good time exploring some of the churches, the markets, seeing children getting out of school, etc.

We ended up visiting two of the temples (they look like cathedrals to us), plus the main cathedral. They are incredible- Zacatecas is over 450 years old, and there was a lot of money floating around here back in the day. In fact, the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been well-preserved, and they've done a good job preserving the city yet still keeping it alive.

We've noticed a lot of incredibly beautiful dresses for sale in these towns. They mostly look like wedding dresses, but there are a lot that aren't white, either. We both fell in love with the designs, colors, and prices. You can get pretty much any style of wedding dress for about $150-200- and these aren't frumpy or plain, they are as intricate and stylish as you'd find anywhere.

Because the city is spread across hills, and there's no concrete or pavement (instead, it is paved in stone), the sidewalks often have a lot of steps, and they can be a little slick. The rock is fairly basaltic, which means it's dark. Tamara took a pretty rough tumble on the sidewalk around a fountain- I tried to catch her, but that made the situation worse. She seems to be okay, just another scrape for her collection.
