3/23: In Zacatecas

Today was our last full day in Zacatecas. We need to run some errands, but mainly wanted to loaf and see the town a little more. On our way out, we happened upon a line of cars with balloons tied to them. It was a very small parade- about 15 vehicles, complete with a police escort through town, and the cars were honking their horns. There were trucks in the parade, and the beds were full of little kids, all dressed up. We have no idea what the parade was for- and by the expressions on the children, they probably didn't either.

We then went to a big fabric/craft store and had Tamara's boots repaired. The velcro around the calves wasn't working- the loop part had softened and wouldn't stick- so we had them rivet snaps onto both boots. They are difficult to engage but hold very well- that will make Tamara worry less.

We then did some more browsing/shopping through the markets. You could spend days in there, especially if you are a clothes or shoe hound. A town the size of Zacatecas probably has 200 women's fashion stores, plus another 100 shoe stores. Some of it was the same, but most of them had a unique selection.

We then went for a big adventure- haircuts. It's hard when you don't speak much of the language, but we got quite reasonable cuts for a grand total of $7. On our way to a bakery, we happened across a little song/dance festival that was being put on by a government education board (we think). There were presentations of traditional singing and dancing. Pretty neat.

Tomorrow we leave for Guanajuato. We'll probably stay there a couple of nights.
