Mexico: San Miguel de Allende: Bullfight
Back to Wandering with Tedder & Tamara: pictures
On Sabato Semana (the day before Easter), we went to a bullfight. It's a somewhat brutal event, but also an interesting pageant.
Basically, when the bull is brought out, there are 3 acts (like a play). Two darts are stabbed into the bull's jugular during each act. The majority of the act, however, is the bullfighter (and others) enticing the bull to run around the ring to tire out.
After the three acts, the bullfighter takes a sword and delivers a final blow to the bull. It must be done from directly in front of the bull- which isn't easy when 1100 pounds of angry bull is coming towards you. A good bullfighter will get the sword in on the first try, but on a few it took longer.
After the sword is inserted, the bull drops fairly quickly. Next, the assistant comes out and completely severs the jugular with a dagger.

Shoes thrown into the ring from the crowd. It was in good fun- the bullfighter was throwing them back.
