Mexico: Campeche: Fortifications and Museum
Back to Wandering with Tedder & Tamara: pictures
Tamara visited the archeological museum and explored the fortification system on her own. Campeche was walled to prevent pirate and 'indian' attacks from land - the sea is too shallow here for danger from ships. The system is comprised of a thick stone wall, with baluartes at key points (kind of like mini-forts). There were a few guarded entrances through the walls, and a fort on either side of the city. The archeological museum is housed in the fort, with artifacts from Mayan cities and tombs.
